Module 2 Safety – Lesson 4: Hazardous Materials

A major part of workplace safety involves the safe handling of hazardous materials.  This lesson will introduce students to MSDS/SDS and hazardous material identification.  Pages 116-123 in text.

-Sheet/Book required by OSHA

-Contains info on all hazardous chemicals used in the building

-Chemical name, hazards, treatment information

-Must be located in open area close to where chemical is being used

Hazardous Materials Identification

Students should know the symbols for the various hazardous materials. (slides 39-50)

These include:

  • Flammable
  • Poisonous
  • Toxic
  • Biohazard
  • Compressed gas
  • Radioactive
  • Explosive
  • Corrosive

Students also need to know the colors for each hazard.

These include:

  • Blue – health hazard
  • Red – fire hazard
  • Yellow – reactivity hazard
  • White – specific hazard

Students should also understand the number classification for each hazard.  The need to know 1-4 numbers indicate the severity of risk.  1 = low, 4=high.

Students also need to know the PPE for each hazard.
